Reine Claude plums, also known as greengages, are an extraordinarily sweet variety. The French name means “Queen Claude,” in honour of a French queen—rightly called the queen of plums! Their skin is naturally pale green but turns yellow as they ripen. These plums have a high sugar content, around 30 Brix, balanced by lively acidity, creating a sweet, tangy, and honeyed taste with syrupy floral and fruity nuances.
They are cultivars of the common Middle Eastern plum, grown in temperate regions. Known for their rich, confectionery flavour, they are considered among the finest dessert plums. They are also enjoyed unripe when pleasantly tart, firm, and crunchy. They can be used in fruit salads as well as in tarts.
