Reine Claude plums, also known as greengages, are an extraordinarily sweet variety. The French name means “Queen Claude”, in honour of a French queen – rightly called the queen of plums. Their skin is naturally pale green, turning golden yellow as they ripen. With a high sugar content of around 30 Brix, balanced by lively acidity, they offer a sweet, tangy, honeyed taste with floral and fruity nuances.
Cultivars of the common Middle Eastern plum, they thrive in temperate regions. Renowned for their rich, dessert‑like flavour, they are considered among the finest plums. Even unripe, they are enjoyed for their pleasant tartness, firm texture, and crunchy bite. Perfect in fruit salads or baked into tarts, they shine in both fresh and cooked preparations.
A famous way to enjoy Reine Claude plums is the classic Tarte Reine‑Claude, a simple yet elegant recipe that highlights their exquisite sweetness.
