From the lush pastures of the Poitou Charentes region, Le Meunier is a distinguished family owned fromagerie that has been crafting exceptional goat cheeses since 1925, guided by an unwavering commitment to raw milk and patient, artisanal affinage. This esteemed house is known for transforming fresh curds into works of edible art, each wheel bearing the distinct fingerprint of its terroir and the careful hand of its cheesemakers. The Étoile de Gatine, whose name translates to “Star of Gatine,” is a tribute to the Gatine hills that roll across the French countryside, and its star shaped form is a poetic homage to the constellation of flavours found within.
Legend tells that this cheese was first created in the early 20th century by a farmer’s wife who wished to celebrate the clear, starry nights that blanket the region, shaping her goat cheese into a five pointed star as a gift for her children. Today, it stands as a symbol of rustic elegance and regional pride. Made from full fat raw goat’s milk, this small star shaped cheese features a natural, slightly wrinkled rind with a delicate grey blue bloom. The paste is initially firm and chalky near the surface, yet reveals a luscious, melting creaminess at its heart as it matures over three to four weeks. On the palate, it offers a bright, zesty lemon tang that gradually gives way to deeper, nutty undertones and a subtle hint of wild herbs, finishing with a pleasant, lingering piquancy that is unmistakably goat.
To enjoy it at its peak, we recommend serving at room temperature, allowing its complex layers to fully express themselves. It is delightful crumbled over a warm beetroot salad, spread onto crusty sourdough, or simply enjoyed on its own with a sprinkle of black pepper. For a perfect pairing, choose a crisp Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire, whose grassy minerality complements the cheese’s acidity, or a dry Chenin Blanc for its honeyed nuances. A light, fruity red like a Pinot Noir also works beautifully, its soft tannins softening the goat’s tang while enhancing its earthy character.
