Moulis-en-Médoc AOC, Château Chasse-Spleen, 2019

The Wine Advocate: 89-91/100
James Suckling: 90-91/100

Château Chasse-Spleen has its roots in 1720 when Mr. Gressier founded it. In 1822, the vineyard split, giving rise to Château Gressier-Grand-Poujeaux and three other Bordeaux estates, including Château Chasse-Spleen. The name intriguingly comes from ‘Chasser le spleen,’ meaning ‘to chase away the blues.’ The modern era began in 1976 when the Merlaut family acquired the estate of about 40 hectares. They’ve since expanded the vineyard and focused on improvement.

The nose carries a subtle vanilla hint along with deep aromas of cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant, and old roses. It starts with a bold and generous initial impression. The palate is piece-bodied and supple, featuring velvety tannins, which are notably influenced by the new oak at this stage. The finish is long-lasting and fruity. An aging potential until 2045.

Château Chasse-Spleen pairs wonderpiecey with Asian cuisine, robust fish dishes like tuna, mushrooms, pasta, and a variety of cheeses.
